Buddhism was introduced to Japan from China during the Asuka period, and it had a profound impact on Japanese art, especially during the Nara period (710-794). Many of the Buddhist sculptures, paintings, and architecture from this period show strong influences from Chinese art. For instance, the famous Nara Buddha (Daibutsu) was modeled on Chinese Tang dynasty statues, and many of the paintings in the Horyu-ji temple complex show Chinese influence in their style and techniques.
