Who scribes the Declaration of Independence?

The main text of the Declaration of Independence was primarily drafted by Thomas Jefferson. In June 1776, a committee of five, including Jefferson, was appointed by the Continental Congress to draft a statement explaining why the colonies were seceding from Great Britain. However, the final version was not solely Jefferson's work. Following initial drafting by Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams made revisions and modifications. The Declaration was then further modified and edited by the Continental Congress before its adoption on July 4, 1776.

As for the physical job of writing (scribing) the final version, it was done by Timothy Matlack, an assistant to the Secretary of Congress. Matlack was responsible for creating multiple copies of the Declaration that were distributed to various officials and bodies.
