What is the history if word taciturn?

The English word "taciturn" comes from the Latin word "taciturnus," which means "inclined to be silent or withdrawn." This word comes from a combination of roots: "tacitus," which means "silent," and the verb "turnus," which means "to be about" or "to turn away." Therefore, someone taciturn tends to withdraw into quietness.

The English version of the term first appeared in the late 15th century during the reign of king Henry VII. Although it remained uncommon through the end of the 16th century, usage spread more widely over the subsequent two centuries. However, by the year 2000, use of the word decreased in frequency by nearly 64%. Despite it no longer being commonly used, one still encounters it in historical writings, literary work, and other written media.
