What did jesters do in their free time?

The work of a jester was physically and mentally demanding. While in the presence of the court, they were expected to continuously entertain and amuse the guests. While jesters were treated with respect, their lives were not filled with leisure. They were expected to write new, clever material. They studied popular trends, politics and the latest news in order to create original jokes that were relevant and entertaining. During their free time, they would practice comedy routines, try out new material on friends, and hone their physical and comedic skills in preparation for their next entertaining act.
