Why were there 3 monarchs in 1 year?

In 1936, King George V died and his son, Edward VIII, succeeded to the throne. However, Edward VIII abdicated the throne after less than a year, and was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI. George VI died in 1952 and was succeeded by his daughter, Elizabeth II.

There were three monarchs in 1 year because of the death of King George V and the abdication of King Edward VIII.
