Why did they start Veterans Day?

Armistice Day, the precursor to Veterans Day, originated in 1919 as a one-time commemoration of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 that made November 11 an annual observance as Armistice Day to honor those who served in World War I, and specifically those who died in service.

In 1938, Congress changed the Armistice Day observance into a national holiday honoring all veterans and changed its name to Veterans Day, which was officially recognized on May 26, 1947, through a bill signed by President Harry S. Truman.
