What was the original purpose of Christopher voyage in 1492?

The original purpose of Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1492 was to find a new route from Spain to Asia, especially China and India, which were sources of valuable goods such as silk, spices, and gold. Columbus believed that he could reach these destinations by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. He did not realize that the American continents lay between Europe and Asia, and he instead encountered islands in the Caribbean Sea.
