The Sumerian civilization (c. 4500–1900 BCE) is considered the earliest known civilization which left behind written records. The Sumerian's greatest contribution to civilization was the invention of writing, known as cuneiform script, which allowed for communication and record-keeping. Other significant contributions include the development of mathematics, astronomy, and the creation of the first law code, known as the Code of Ur-Nammu.
