There is no definitive answer to this question as the first houses would have been rudimentary structures built from materials such as mud, wood and stone. Archaeological evidence suggests that settlements dating back to around 12,000 years ago in the Middle East and Asia Minor contained structures that could be considered houses. These structures would have been basic shelters from the elements rather than the more complex and permanent structures we associate with the term "house" today.
