The Concordat included the following agreements:
- Catholicism was recognized as the religion of the majority in France.
- The Pope agreed to abolish the Civil Constitution of the Clergy passed in 1790, which attempted to subordinate the church in France to the state.
- The government would pay the salaries of the clergy.
- The church would be able to acquire property.
The Concordat of 1801 was a significant success for Napoleon as it helped to stabilize relations between the church and the state in France. However, the agreement was controversial in some quarters, particularly among those who believed that Napoleon had made too many concessions to the church.
