Ancient history

Why did the Inca people build terraces?

To cultivate crops in mountainous terrain. The Incas were an ingenious and advanced civilization that managed to thrive in the harsh environment of the Andes mountains. One of the challenges they faced was finding suitable land for farming, as the mountainsides were steep and rocky. To overcome this, the Incas built terraces or "andenes", that transformed the slopes into fertile and manageable farmland.

Using terracing systems

- Allowed the Incas to expand their agricultural production on steep slopes.

- Helped the Incas conserve soil and prevent erosion.

- Provided efficient water management through irrigation channels, ensuring the land was well-watered for cultivation.

- Created favorable microclimates, protecting plants from extreme weather conditions and increasing crop diversity.

-Enabled efficient use of labor by dividing the terraces into smaller sections for cultivation by different families.
