Who ruled over Islam after Ali ibn Abu Talib?

After Ali ibn Abu Talib's death in 661 CE, the rule over the Islamic empire continued under the Umayyad dynasty. Mu'awiya I, the governor of Syria, became the first Umayyad caliph and established his capital in Damascus. The Umayyad dynasty ruled over Islam until 750 CE when they were overthrown by the Abbasid Revolution.
