Ancient history

Why could scribes only write?

Scribes were not limited to writing. They were highly educated individuals who performed various tasks in ancient societies. Scribes were responsible for recording and maintaining written documents, including legal contracts, historical records, religious texts, and administrative documents. They were also involved in tasks such as accounting, bookkeeping, and correspondence. Depending on the time and place, scribes could hold important positions in government, administration, and religious institutions. Their abilities often extended beyond writing and included reading, interpreting, and composing literary works.
