The Wars of the Roses was caused because of a dispute over the throne of England. It was a series of civil wars that took place in England between 1455 and 1485 between two rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet: the House of York and the House of Lancaster. The Yorkists claimed the throne through the male line of Edward III, while the Lancastrians claimed the throne through the female line of Henry IV. The conflict ended with the victory of Henry Tudor, who became King Henry VII of England, and the beginning of the Tudor dynasty.
