2. The Great Disappointment of 1844. When Jesus did not return in 1844 as Miller had predicted, many of his followers were disillusioned and disappointed. 3. The emergence of various Adventist denominations. In the aftermath of the Great Disappointment, several different Adventist denominations emerged, each with its distinctive beliefs and practices. These denominations continue to exist today and play an important role in the worldwide Advent movement.
