What is cheongsam?

Cheongsam or qipao is a traditional Chinese dress that originated in the 1920s. It is a one-piece, close-fitting dress that emphasizes curves. The cheongsam is usually made from silk or cotton and features buttons, a high collar and a slit on one or both sides. It is often worn with high heels and a small handbag.

Cheongsam was popular in Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s, and was adopted by many Chinese women as a symbol of modernity and emancipation from the traditional robes. It was also worn by famous Chinese actresses and singers such as Audrey Hepburn and Maggie Cheng.

Today, the cheongsam is still worn as a formal dress for special occasions, such as weddings and banquets, and is also popular among tourists.
