Why does Odysseus need to go Hades?

In Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey," Odysseus does not go to Hades, the realm of the dead, he instead visits there on a different mission. Odysseus encounters various challenges and obstacles during his epic journey that span ten years while returning home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. He does however consult with the blind prophet, Teiresias in Hades who helps guide him throughout his quest.
