What kind of people came to Jamestown and how long did they plan stay?

Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America, founded in 1607. The settlers mainly came from England, but there were also some Dutch, French, and Polish immigrants. Most of the settlers were young men in their early 20s, mostly single, the majority farmers by occupation. The investors in the Virginia Company of London who financed the settlement were hoping for a quick return on their investment, so the settlers were under pressure to make the colony profitable. The settlers initially expected to stay for a few years and return to England, but some chose to remain and build a life in the New World.
