What does the term exoduster mean?

Exodusters were African-Americans who migrated from the Southern United States to Kansas, Oklahoma, and other Western states between 1879 and 1881. The term refers to the Biblical Exodus, in which the Israelites escaped from slavery in Egypt. The Exodusters were seeking freedom from the racism and violence they faced in the South, and they hoped to find a better life in the West.
