- Running Away - One way slaves resisted slavery was by running away from their enslavers. Thousands of enslaved individuals escaped to the North via what became known as the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses.
- Work Slowdowns and Sabotage - Slaves sometimes resisted by slowing down their work or damaging their enslaver's property.
- Open Rebellion - In rare instances, slaves openly rebelled against their enslavers. The most well-known slave rebellion occurred in 1831 in Southampton, VA. Led by Nat Turner, about 60 enslaved individuals killed up to 65 white people before they were captured or killed.
