The leader of each village in ancient Greece was called the "archon". The archons were elected officials who held office for a one-year term. There were three archons in each village: the archon eponymous, who gave his name to the year; the archon basileus, who was responsible for religious matters; and the archon polemarch, who was responsible for military affairs.
