What are penates in ancient Rome?

Penates were ancient Roman gods who protected the household and family. They were considered to be the protectors of the home and the family's possessions. The Penates were also believed to be the guardians of the family's ancestors. They were often worshipped in a small shrine in the home, called the lararium. The Penates were typically depicted as two young men, wearing togas and holding cornucopias. They were often accompanied by the Lares, who were also household gods.
