Ancient history

Why was this time period given the name middle ages?

The term "Middle Ages" was first used in the 15th century to describe the period between the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the start of the Renaissance. It was used as a way to distinguish this time period from the classical era of Greece and Rome and the modern era that was beginning to emerge. The term "Middle Ages" was also used to describe the "middle" point between the two eras.
