How do the residents of Salem define witchcraft?

The residents of Salem in the 17th century defined witchcraft as the practice of magic or sorcery by the use of spells, charms, and other supernatural means to harm others or to achieve personal gain. It was believed that witches were in league with the devil and that their powers were derived from this unholy alliance. Witchcraft was considered a serious crime and those accused of practicing it were often subjected to harsh punishment, including execution.
