Who were nathpanthis?

Nathpanthis were a medieval sect of Shaivite yogis who flourished in the 11th and 12th centuries in the Indian subcontinent. They were also known as the Kanphata Yogis or "ear-split yogis" due to their practice of piercing their ears and wearing large earrings.

Origins and Beliefs:

The Nathpanthi sect was founded by Gorakhnath, a renowned yogin and mystic believed to have lived during the 11th century. Gorakhnath was considered a disciple of the legendary yogi Matsyendranath. The Nathpanthis followed the teachings of Gorakhnath and embraced a unique blend of yogic practices, tantric rituals, and Shaivite philosophy.

Their beliefs centered around the concept of attaining liberation (moksha) through kundalini awakening, the activation of spiritual energy residing at the base of the spine. They practiced intense yogic postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana) to achieve this state of spiritual realization.

Yogic Practices:

Nathpanthis were renowned for their mastery of hatha yoga, a physical discipline that emphasizes physical postures and breathing exercises. They developed various asanas and sequences, such as the challenging headstand (sirsasana) and the lotus position (padmasana), to purify the body and prepare it for higher spiritual practices.

Spiritual Teachings:

Their teachings emphasized the importance of self-discipline, renunciation, and the pursuit of spiritual knowledge. They believed that the body was a temple and advocated for its purification through yogic practices. Nathpanthis also emphasized the significance of a guru (spiritual teacher) in guiding the disciple on the path of self-realization.

Influence and Legacy:

The Nathpanthi sect had a profound influence on the development of yoga and spirituality in India. Their practices and teachings spread throughout the country, contributing to the popularization of yoga beyond monastic circles. Many notable yogis and saints, such as Dattatreya, Jnanadeva, and Namdev, were influenced by Nathpanthi teachings.

The legacy of the Nathpanthis continues to be felt today, as their tradition has survived through various lineages of yoga and spirituality. Their emphasis on yogic practices, tantric rituals, and the pursuit of liberation has inspired countless seekers on the spiritual path.
