The concentration camps and the extermination camps, its brainchild, are both notorious for their cruelty and inhumanity. The Germans in the extermination camp of Treblinka, as in the others, they were particularly fond of sadistic "games" with the prisoners as victims.
Perhaps one of the most distorted was the definition, literally, of "dog-keepers" in the toilets of the camps. The toilets were the prisoners' last refuge. It was the place where for a few minutes they could rest away from the onslaught of the SS and the Ukrainian guards.
The sick or weaker prisoners took refuge in the toilets to get a breather without risking immediate execution by the bailiffs. But they reckoned without SS Sergeant Kurt Kittner... Kittner was one of the worst executioners in Treblinka hell.
He noticed that the prisoners were resting for a few minutes in the toilets and decided to stop them. For this purpose, he appointed prisoners "cat guardians" , as he mockingly called them, in every toilet.
To make the prisoners sweat the Germans dressed the "keepers" in the uniform of rabbis, putting on them the special hats worn by the Jewish singers and they hung an alarm clock from each one's neck. They also provided them with a whip and ordered that no prisoner stay in the toilet for more than 2 minutes an hour.
They also forbade more than 5 prisoners to be in the toilets at the same time. If the prisoner or the "keeper" did not carry out their orders, a savage beating and then execution awaited them. As far as Kittner was concerned he was in the cleanup category for not paying for his crimes. He escaped the war and was brought to justice only in 1964, but he died and did not have time to stand trial.
