Annam who ruled France Vietnam or more specifically its central region, known as Trung Ky (Central Administrative Department) in pre-colonial times. The term Annam (Chinese:"pacified south") was never officially used by the Vietnamese to describe their country, even during the French colonial period.

The central part of Vietnam, known to the French as Annam, is largely a highland region extending from the Ma flow to extends south to the Cape of Ba Kiem and 76 km east-southeast of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). The former imperial capital Hue has remained the most important cultural center in the region.

Much of central Vietnam was under the control of the Cham Empire until the expanding Vietnamese state defeated the Cham rulers in 1471 and the way for a steady Vietnamese movement towards Mekong Delta leveled . With the de facto partition of Vietnam between the Nguyen and Trinh seigneurial families in the 16th century, Hue became the seat of the Nguyen. As Nguyen Anh when Emperor Gia Long unified all of Vietnam in 1802, Hue became the imperial capital.

Central Vietnam was placed under French "protection" in 1883/85, leaving the Hue court with only nominal Power back. In the confused period immediately after World War II, Vietnam was temporarily divided at latitude 16°N, leaving parts of central Vietnam under different occupation authorities. After the end of the First Indochina War in 1954 went those on the Geneva Conference specified temporary divider through central Vietnam again, this time at the 17th parallel.

The predominant hills and plateaus of central Vietnam are occupied by a multitude of hill tribes, some of whom speak variants of the Cham language, others Use Mon-Khmer languages . The narrow, fertile coasts level from central Vietnam is occupied by the majority Vietnamese and is largely devoted rice culture . The largest city in central Vietnam is Da Nang ( see there ) and the best anchor is Cam Ranh Bay .
