Battle of Camlann

The Battle of Camlann is the last battle in which King Arthur is said to have fought.

The quest for the Grail has been over for some time and Arthur has lost most of his knights. He was betrayed by his wife Guinevere who fled with Lancelot. It is this moment that Mordred chooses to ascend Arthur's throne.

The two men surrounded by a few knights find themselves in Camlann, where Arthur still hopes to resolve the conflict amicably. While they are face to face, one of the knights draws his sword after being bitten by a snake, it is the involuntary outbreak of hostilities. At the end of the day, Mordred wounds Arthur before the latter kills him.

After giving his Excalibur sword to Bedivere to throw into the lake, Arthur is brought to the Isle of Avalon by four women, including the fairy Morgana and the Lady of the Lake.

Archaeologist Leslie Alcock dates the Battle of Camlann to 490 AD.

Some historians place Camlann on Salisbury Plain in southern England.
