On the other side the situation is different. The moral forces, at the political level, derive from the following parties:the C.E.D.A. of Gil Robles, the Agrarians (Martinez de Velasco), the Spanish Renovation (Calvo Sotelo), the Falange (José Antonio), and the Carlists. The Radicals (Lerroux), Conservatives (Maura) and Liberal Democrats (Alvarez) will abstain. In reality, the designs of the army set in motion by Franco are not uniform. At the top, the rebel generals — Sanjurjo, Franco, Mola, Varela do not agree among themselves. Some are for the dictatorship, others for the monarchy, the latter not being fixed on the candidate Alphonse X111 or his son, don Juan. The Church itself, although naturally inclined towards those who have placed it at the top of their program, has not won unanimous support.
The Basque clergy frankly disapprove. Only. the monarchy - and especially the Carlists - is unreservedly in favor of the national uprising", although, later, when Franco is in power> Jaime, the eldest son of Alfonso XIII, will harshly signify his dismissal.
However, in the absence of political unity, the Movimiento will benefit from the moral support of the wealthy classes, the business bourgeoisie, Catholic and nationalist youth and, above all, the mystique of the Falange. For many Spaniards, this war of riots, hidden for several months and succeeding a long period of anarchy, became a crusade for order and the homeland, a homeland where one would find the intoxicating myths of the Century of gold and the double notion of God and greatness. Traditionalism and chivalry. The instrument of this crusade will be the army, very different from that of the Republic. In the absence of numerical superiority, the leaders of the rebellion would have an important advantage against the adversary:almost all the military cadres would line up under their banner. What will ensure the initial success of the uprising is that its author, Franco, will have with him the best of the army:the Moroccan regiments, or regulares, the civil guard and the tertio (the foreign legion), including officers trained and educated, disciplined non-commissioned officers and a seasoned troop.
Here then, at the dawn of this bloody day, are the moral and material forces present. Ideas and men?
Certainly, but also passions and temperaments, which will clash under a deluge of fire and in the greenish mud of the trenches, moved by a mutual hatred which, with the hindsight of time surprises those who have not approached Spain closely. Hay que acabar con esa gente (we must put an end to these people4à), they say on both sides... These people? Galicians, Castilians, Andalusians, Navarrese, yesterday all united by blood ties, today irreconcilable enemies. These people ? In one camp,
the "rebels" the "fascists", the "Francoists", in the other, the "Marxists" and especially the rojos - the reds.
Or, for the neutrals, the “nationalists” and the “republicans”. But one and the other will not fight only to change the regime of their country. Their war is also a vendetta. We settle an old score, which dates from the Middle Ages. It is a social and religious release. By setting fire to the convents, we take revenge on the Inquisition. Black Spain and Red Spain rehearse the fight of the Archangel. Feudal war, religious war, the Spanish Civil War will be an atrocious family feud.
