Le Triomphant (destroyer)

Le Triomphant is a Le Fantasque-class destroyer that served in the French Navy. It was built in the Ateliers et Chantiers de France-Dunkerque and delivered in 1934, three years after it was ordered.

Service

At the outbreak of World War II, he was assigned to the Raid Force. From June 1940, the ship joined the Free French Naval Forces. Philippe Auboyneau takes his command, re-arms him and leads him to the Pacific. Promoted to captain, he led the command of the Free French Naval Forces in the Pacific from Le Triomphant. While in the New Hebrides, he was tasked in February 1942 with evacuating Westerners and British Phosphate Commission (BPC) contract workers living on Ocean Island and Nauru, two phosphate-rich central Pacific islands. whose invasion by the Japanese looks imminent. On February 23, he evacuated from Nauru 61 Westerners, 391 Chinese and 49 members of the military garrison and on February 28, 823 Chinese and 232 other BPC employees at Ocean Island

In September 1945, he took part in the landing of the Allied forces in Saigon.

The ship was decommissioned on December 19, 1954 and scrapped in Bizerte in 1960.
