From these two histories some general conclusions can be drawn about the instability of African states in the post-independence period. It is clear that the causes of this instability must be sought in the upheavals and the imbalance created by colonialism. These phenomena differed from one country to another, so the initial cause of each conflict could take various forms:popular uprising against an unrepresentative regime; struggle for power between local elites; ethnic or religious disputes, generally related to an economic cause; or a combination of all of these.
But once the conflict had broken out, all sorts of new factors came into play, the most important being the intervention of external forces interested in its outcome. . Any mediation was useless.
