REGNIER
, Claude-Ambroise, Duke of Massa (Blamont, November 5, 1746 - Paris, June 25, 1814). Lawyer in Nancy, deputy of the third estate of the bailiwick of Nancy in the States General, Regnier sat among the moderates. He was forgotten during the Terror, then entered the Council of Elders in 1795. He participated in the coup d'etat of 18-Brumaire and joined the Council of State when it was created, collaborating in the work of drafting the Civil Code. He replaced Abrial as Grand Judge and the rest from 1802 to November 1813. At the same time, he directed the police until the restoration, on July 10, 1804, of the Ministry of General Police, made necessary by his incapacity. Count of the Empire in 1808 and Duke of Massa di Carrara in 1809, Regnier lost the Ministry of Justice on November 20, 1813, being replaced by Molé. The Emperor then appointed him President of the Legislative Body, of which he was not a member, to the great dissatisfaction of the deputies. Regnier adheres to the forfeiture of the Emperor in 1814. He is buried in the Pantheon.
