Mamluk sword (Kilij)

The kilij (Turkish:kiliç:“sword”) is a one-handed sword, slightly curved and sharp on one side, of Turkish origin.

It was used by the armies of Köktürks, the Uyghur Khanate, Timurids, the Mamluk Sultanate of Cairo and the Ottoman Empire. This saber measured 77 cm in length. The scabbard is in leather, with clevis, rivets and rings of steel bails.

This type of saber was brought back to France by officers of the French army after the Egyptian campaign and was used by officers of the great army of Napoleon I, such as Marshal of the Empire Jean Lannes or General Antoine Charles Louis de Lasalle. .

The British cavalry at the end of the 19th century also used a model of saber strongly inspired by the Kilij, but with a brass scabbard.
