The Remes - Latin Remi - were a Gallic people. Their name means "the first".
Opida
Their capital was Vieux Reims in Variscourt before moving to Reims. Several oppida are identified:Vieux Reims in Variscourt, Reims, Attila's camp in La Cheppe and the oppidum of Vieux-Laon located in Saint-Thomas (Aisne) which could be the famous site of Bibrax, of which Jules César speaks. in his "Gallic War" and near which he won in 57 BC a great but bloody victory against the allied Belgians. Politics
Before the arrival of the Romans, the Remi were allied with the Ambiani, the Bellovaci and the Atrebates. They quickly allied with Caesar during the Gallic Wars, faithful allies, they will never betray their commitments.
