The first European country to control large areas of North America and the Caribbean Sea was Spain. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Spain established colonies in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, and claimed sovereignty over vast territories in North America, including what is now the southwestern United States. Spain also established settlements in the Philippines, Guam, and other Pacific islands, and had a presence in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
