History of Oceania

Why was the Battle of Coral Sea a turning point for Allies?

It marked the first time since the start of the Pacific War that Japanese had suffered serious setbacks. It provided an early indication that Japan’s expansion was not only unstoppable.

- Battle proved the vulnerability of aircraft carriers

- Japanese lost several key naval commanders and crewmen who could not easily be replaced. Also many skilled pilots were lost

- The Japanese advance Southward was temporarily put on hold as they regrouped, giving Allies precious time

Japan never fully recovered and subsequently suffered other defeats until their eventual surrender.
