History of Europe

What were two methods that europeans used to control colonies?

1. Direct rule: This method involved the European country sending its own officials to govern the colony. The officials would make all of the decisions, and the local people would have no say in how they were governed. This method was often used in colonies that were considered to be strategically important, or in colonies where the local people were seen as being too primitive to govern themselves.

2. Indirect rule: This method involved the European country allowing the local people to govern themselves, but under the supervision of European officials. The European officials would advise the local leaders and make sure that they did not do anything that would harm the interests of the European country. This method was often used in colonies that were considered to be less important, or in colonies where the local people were seen as being capable of governing themselves.
