History of Europe

What was the main purpose for dual alliance in 1879?

The Austro-German Alliance, also known as the Dual Alliance, was a defensive pact between the German Empire and Austria-Hungary concluded on 7 October 1879. The main purpose of the alliance was to prevent their common enemy, Russia, from expanding its influence in the Balkans and potentially gaining access to the Mediterranean Sea.

It also aimed to counter the increasingly close relations between Russia and France, the other major European power at the time. Thus, the dual alliance had both defensive and preventive objectives related to Russia and its Balkan ambitions

Additionally, the alliance provided mutual security assurance for both Germany and Austria-Hungary's territorial integrity against military conflicts and diplomatic isolation in cases of war with common external threats. This strengthened their geopolitical positions in mainland Europe in context of rapidly rising national tensions leading up to World War I
