The earliest known metal coins were minted in Lydia, in modern-day Turkey, in the 7th century BC. These coins were made of electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver.
Paper currency
The first paper money was issued in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). These notes were called "flying money" and were made from bark mulberry fibers. Paper currency was also used in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) and the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD).
