Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who made three voyages to North America between 1534 and 1542. He was the first European to explore the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River, and he claimed the land for France. Cartier was searching for a westward route to Asia, but he never found it. He did, however, discover many natural resources in North America, including furs, timber, and fish. His voyages helped to open up the Americas to European exploration and settlement.
