History of Europe

What is Greek name?

The name "Greek" comes from the Latin _Graecus_, which was derived from the earlier _Graii_ used by the Romans. The ultimate origin of the earlier term is uncertain and possibly pre-Greek. The Greeks call their language _Hellenika_ (Ελληνικά), and themselves Hellenes (Έλληνες), both ultimately connected to the mythical ancestor Hellen. The term "Hellenic" is commonly used instead of "Greek" to refer to what pertains to Greece and Cyprus, and especially to Greek culture and the Greek language in all its forms, from the most archaic to the modern. The term "Greek" is used especially in reference to the modern Greeks and the country's modern civilization.
