History of Europe

What where the three ways Rome was ruled?

1. Monarchy

The Roman monarchy was the first form of government in ancient Rome. It began with the founding of Rome by Romulus and Remus in 753 BC and lasted until 509 BC when the last king, Tarquin the Proud, was overthrown.

During the monarchy, Rome was ruled by a king who had absolute power. The king was the head of state, the chief military commander, and the chief judge. He was also the religious leader of Rome and performed many important rituals.

The Roman monarchy was not a hereditary system. Instead, the king was elected by the Senate, a group of wealthy and powerful men who advised the king.

2. Republic

The Roman republic was the second form of government in ancient Rome. It began with the overthrow of the monarchy in 509 BC and lasted until 27 BC when the Roman Empire was established.

During the republic, Rome was ruled by a series of elected officials. The most important of these officials were the two consuls, who were the chief executives of the state. The consuls were elected by the Roman citizens in an annual election.

The Roman republic was a complex system of government with many different checks and balances. This system was designed to prevent any one person from becoming too powerful and to protect the rights of the Roman citizens.

3. Empire

The Roman Empire was the third and final form of government in ancient Rome. It began with the establishment of the empire by Augustus Caesar in 27 BC and lasted until the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD.

During the empire, Rome was ruled by a series of emperors who had absolute power. The emperors were not elected, but instead they inherited their position from their fathers or were chosen by the army.

The Roman Empire was a vast and powerful empire that stretched from Britain to North Africa to the Middle East. The empire was ruled by a complex bureaucracy that was responsible for administering the empire's vast territory.
