History of Europe

What year was mercantilism started?

The term "mercantilism" was first used in the 17th century to describe the economic policies of European countries at the time. However, the practices associated with mercantilism, such as tariffs, subsidies, and monopolies, have existed for much longer. Some historians trace the origins of mercantilism back to the ancient world, while others argue that it began in the Middle Ages.
