* Collectivize agriculture. Stalin also collectivized agriculture, forcing peasants to give up their land and work on collective farms. This allowed the government to control food production and ensure that there was enough food to feed the growing urban population.
* Centralize power. Stalin centralized power in the hands of the Communist Party. He purged his rivals and created a cult of personality around himself. This allowed him to maintain control over the country and implement his policies without opposition.
