History of Europe

What government did England have in the 1800s?

England had a constitutional monarchy in the 1800s. This means that the monarch (the king or queen) was the head of state, but their power was limited by a constitution that defined the rights of citizens and the powers of the government. The British Parliament, which is made up of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, was the main legislative body in England at this time. The Prime Minister was the head of government and was appointed by the monarch, but they had to have the support of the majority of the House of Commons in order to stay in power.
