How much did an indulgence cost at the Catholic church?

Indulgences did not have a set price and could vary depending on various factors. During the medieval period, indulgences were associated with specific requirements, rituals, or good deeds. While some could be freely earned through prayer, participation in certain religious acts, or pilgrimages, others might involve a voluntary financial contribution toward church projects or charity.

Pope Leo X (1513-1521) allowed for a schedule of fixed sums of money that could be offered for specific absolutions. This concept, although not directly related to individual indulgences, fueled some controversy and is often cited in criticisms of church financial practices of that time. However, the actual process and costs associated with the granting of indulgences could vary substantially across different periods and jurisdictions within the Catholic Church.
