The policy of not enforcing British laws in the American colonies for many years was called "salutary neglect". This policy was in effect from the late 17th century to the mid-18th century. During this time, the British government allowed the colonies to govern themselves with little interference from London. This allowed the colonies to develop their own political and economic systems, which eventually led to the American Revolution.
