With fanatical opponents and fanatical supporters, Georgios Grivas "Digenes", as well as Makarios, manage - decades after their deaths - to divide society on who and how much responsibility they have for the developments in the Republic of Cyprus. On January 27, 1974, George Grivas dies of a heart attack at the age of 76, and three days later his funeral takes place in Limassol.
Grivas died of a heart attack while he was at Elli Christodoulidou's house with her daughters. In the last few days, the general felt very unwell and as his wife was away in Athens, he was transferred to the house of the Christodoulidis family, where his hideout was also located, so as not to remain alone.
The funeral was attended by thousands of people, who turned it into a popular pilgrimage. However, there was no representation from the government, as their relations with Makarios were quite tense, on the verge of civil war, with the coup by EOKA B breaking out a few months later.
