It has always been said that greed, greed, money... blind, they prevent you from seeing the rest of the landscape. Well, with this anecdote from John Henry Newman It is scientifically proven.
John Henry Newman (1801 -1890) was an Anglican priest who converted to Catholicism in 1845 – Henry VIII had to stir at his tomb. Pope Leo XIII made him a cardinal and he was beatified in 2010 in a ceremony presided over by Pope Benedict XVI in the United Kingdom. In his youth he fought, within the Oxford Movement, for the recovery of Catholic roots in England.
On a certain occasion, when he was already a cardinal, he had a talk with an important businessman who boasted of his wealth and boasted of his little or no religious beliefs. Newman, a descendant of bankers and merchants, knew that in order to "reach" this individual, profound speeches based on faith would not serve him, but something practical and, above all, simple.
He took a piece of paper and wrote "GOD". The rich pedant read it and shrugged his shoulders.
Newman took a coin out of his pocket and put it over the word, covering it, and asked:
– Do you see what I have written now?
– No. I only see money
– Indeed, because money blinds him and prevents him from seeing God.
And where God wrote, you can write:understanding, solidarity, friendship, love, sacrifice... You just have to change the size of the coin, or use a ticket, to do this test with unscrupulous people who only live for and for the money.
