Why did King James Executed Sir Walter Raleigh?

Sir Walter Raleigh was not executed by King James I. James I pardoned Raleigh when he ascended the throne in 1603, and Raleigh was a courtier in good standing for many years. However, he was later executed in 1618 when he led an expedition to South America in search of El Dorado in defiance of the King's orders.
